Brown's correspondence documents the sale of goods, primarily calicoes and linens, to J. Nesbitt & Co. of Nantes, France. There is also a series of letters relating to the attempt of the British Navy to close the port of Philadelphia. Correspondence indicates that John Brown was involved in trade with Cuba. Invoices document the shipping of Windsor chairs and other goods to Havana in 1783.

John Brown, a Philadelphia merchant, was born in 1748 in County Tyrone, Ireland, and came to Philadelphia with his father as a young boy. He received his training as a clerk in the house of Robert Morris during the 1760s. During the Revolution, he was Assistant Paymaster-General, Secretary of the Pennsylvania Board of War (1777) and Secretary of the Marine Committee and Board of Admiralty (1779-1781).
